PSNI officers say they believe those who stole the £6,000 Manannán Mac Lir statue from Binevenagh mountain near Limavady were driven by Christian religious zeal…clearly forgetting the Commandment: ‘Thou Shalt Not Steal’

PSNI Chief Inspector Alan Hutton said officers were investigating a religious aspect to the crime which would have involved heavy gear to remove the statue – part of a statue trail across the borough.

Mayor Alan Robinson of the DUP condemned the thieves.

“I have brought people here myself to see the statue and the incredible view over the Foyle. It’s an act of wanton vandalism,” he said.

The sculpture of the Celtic god of the sea was created by Game of Thrones sculptor John Darren Sutton and has been overlooking Lough Foyle since 2013.

THERE have been glowing tributes paid to Limavady toddler Callum Logue who passed away on New Year’s Eve.

The five year old had been battling a debilitating illness all his young life.

Dozens of messages have been posted on Callum’s Facebook page set up to raise awareness of his condition and also money for treatment.

One message summed all those who had been touched by his short life.

It read: “Heaven has gained a wee fighter and angel rest in peace wee man xx.”

Callum Logue was diagnosed with septo-optic dysplasia shortly after birth.

He was also blind, was taking medication for diabetes.

His family, friends and neighbours in Co Derry have over the years raised thousands of pounds for his treatment.

The wee boy’s parents, Emma Magee and Gerard Logue, had spent long hours researching any cures to his his condition.

Money raised helped him visit China to consider stem cell treatment.

Limavady SDLP councillor Gerry Mullan said: “Everyone knew this little boy and there’s a great deal of sadness throughout the borough.

“This is going to be a very difficult time for the family and they will be in my thoughts and prayers.

“Thousands were raised for little Callum and everyone rallied around. I remember them raising money to go to China. It’s such a very sad start to 2015.”

Family friend and fundraiser Neil Mullan said: “He brought so many people together.

“Everyone wanted to raise money and help him. He was such an inspiration and this really puts life into perspective.

“Gerard and Emma have been through so much and deserve so much credit the way they cared for little Callum. It’s just heartbreaking.”

Hundreds of people are expected to attend Callum’s funeral in his home town on Sunday.

Thomas Brolly, of Coolessan Walk, Limavady, faced four charges.

He was charged with possessing cannabis and having the class B drug with intent to supply.

He was also charged with the cultivation of cannabis and being concerned in the supply of the drug.

A PSNI constable told the court police discovered 730 cannabis plants and quantity of the drug ready for street supply in a newly-built house at Farkland Road.

The constable told the court the estimated street value of the haul was between £300,00 and £400,000.

The police witness said following the discovery, the owner of the house was arrested and taken to Strand Road police station.

The court heard while the owner was still being held, Brolly presented himself at the reception desk claiming the drugs were his.

However, during police interviews he said he did so as he was “high on speed.”

The police constable told the court a tenancy agreement was signed by an ‘TI Brolly’, a signature very similar to the accused.

Brolly was remanded in custody to appear in court again on 13 November next.

Police had gone to the man’s home in Limavady in November 2012 and found that he had cuts to his wrist and appeared likely to cause further self harm.

A Taser was used against him, allowing officers to remove the knife before taking him to hospital for treatment.

All firearms incidents, including the use of Tasers, are referred by the Chief Constable to the Police Ombudsman for independent investigation.

In a statement provided to Police Ombudsman investigators probing the incident, the man said: “If they hadn’t fired the Taser I believe I would have seriously injured myself or perhaps killed myself.”

Police Ombudsman Dr Michael Maguire said examination of police records showed the officer who used the Taser was properly trained to carry the weapon and authorised to use it during this incident.

Dr Maguire concluded the use of the Taser during the incident had been lawful, proportionate and necessary
