HOME SLAVE PROBE: MAN CHARGED AFTER WOMAN RESCUED

Man to face Belfast court over claims he kept a woman a house slave for six years

DETECTIVES from PSNI’s Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Unit (MSHTU) have charged a 33-year-old man with requiring another person to perform forced or compulsory labour.

The suspect is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates’ Court this morning, Wednesday, May 1, for a first remand hearing.

As is normal procedure the charge will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

The charge follows the man’s arrest in east Belfast yesterday.

A woman managed to escape from his home and told a member of the public she had been his house slave for the past six years.
