CCTV picture of on the run murderer John Clifford

ON-THE-RUN murderer John Clifford has been arrested this evening.

The unlawfully was handed over to police at the border with Newry by Garda detectives.

He is currently being returned to prison.

Detective Inspector Michael McDonnell said, “I would like to thank our An Garda Síochána colleagues for their assistance in locating Mr Clifford and facilitating his return to Northern Ireland.

“I would also like to thank those members of the public who contacted us with information and the media for their assistance in publicising our appeals for information.”

Clifford failed to return to jail on Sunday, September 2 after being allowed out for an appointment.

He fled on his mobility scooter and was last seen in Northern Ireland at Lanyon train station boarding the Enterprise service to Dublin.

His last known sighting after that was two days later in Ballybriggan, Dublin.

Clifford is now expected to face a court charge of being unlawfully at large.

And he is likely to have his licence revoked indefinitely as a result of not returning to jail on time.
