BD TRAVEL FEATURE….AYRSHIRE’S BEST CARAVAN PARK BY FAR

BY TIM HEDGLEY, GROUP TRAVEL EDITOR

WHEN going on holiday most of us have an idea of where we are going to stay, we generally know the location and the rough area.
However, when Caravanning that can all change and that’s the attraction of taking your accommodation with you.

There a number of things that are very important to caravanners.

  1. The location,
  2. The other facilities provided by the site where you’re going to stay and
  3. The cleanliness of the facilities.

Last week I decided to take my caravan up the West Coast of Scotland between Cairnryan and Irvine.

There are a considerable number of sites and there is a wide difference in the quality of the sites on offer.

In all I visited six sites, but the one I choose to stay was called the Ranch Holiday Park near Maybole about 15 minutes from Turnberry.

It was only when I arrived at the site and checked in, did I hear familiar accents.

Thomas and Vie McAuley and his son Mark and daughter in law Gillian, hail from Donegal and Coleraine.

The family took the site over approximately 15 years ago and have really made some amazing changes and have turned it into a wonderful place to stay.

The site is a mixture of about 100 static caravan and 75 touring pitches which are located in different areas of the park and each have a bespoke set of facilities.

From the south on the A77 – in Maybole turn left onto the B7023 (signposted for Culzean, Maidens); then as above. If you would prefer to take the scenic route past Culzean Castle turn left when you enter the 40mph zone at Turnberry and follow the signs for Culzean and Maybole. The Ranch is on the right just before you reach Maybole.

GREAT VALUE

The touring pitches range from a standard pitch with Electric Hook Up (EHU) to a super pitch with EHU and grey waste drainage and room for an awning.
The ranch holiday park also has a number of facilities.
Prices start at £22-00 per night with EHU which is extremely good value!

The park offer a variety of spacious, well-maintained hard-standing pitches, each with its own exclusive water and electricity supply.
With ample space for even the largest touring caravan and awning, their pitches have a variety of outlooks, and pitches on the top section of the touring park are bounded by attractive ‘rosa rugosa’ (wild rose) hedging for a bit of extra privacy.
the Park welcome both Caravan Club and Caravan & Camping members to The Ranch.

LEISURE TIME

The Leisure Centre is at the hub of the Ranch Holiday park entertainment facilities – both in its location and its attractions.
From their 54-foot swimming pool to a sauna, the chalet-style Leisure Centre offers Ranch guests lots to do.
The pool is heated to a comfortable 90F, and is a perfect 4 feet deep with a level bottom and it features underwater lighting.

A small fee grants you access to the Leisure Centre’s facilities and its only £2-00 extra for the sauna (requires booking).

the Centre is open from 8.30am until 12 noon and 5pm until 9pm, Monday through Saturday, and 8.30am until 5pm on Sunday.

The leisure centre has its own comfortable, well-maintained shower and toilet facilities, and a member of staff is on hand at all times to offer help and advice.

SPOTLESS TOILET FACILITIES

The toilet facilities are extremely important to caravanners, get this right and you are sure to have superb views from customers and here is where the Ranch have not been found wanting.
Spotless toilets, spotless showers and piped music. A Laundry and washing up room all go to ensure a great caravan location and to add to this free fast wifi.
Even the disabled facilities are controlled by a RADAR key.
If you don’t know what a RADAR key is check them out at https://www.radarkey.org.

LOCATION

Located on the Ayrshire coast near Turnberry and Maybole the Ranch Holiday Park is ideally located to visit many of the attractions the Ayrshire coast has to offer.

This is the region that gave Scotland its National Bard, Robert Burns. Explore the great Burns attractions, take a wander around an ancient castle, or learn about the Vikings who once set foot on these very shores. Both Ayrshire and Arran produce a range of tasty treats that you won’t want to miss. Try the fresh seafood, caught daily off the shore, sit down to a main course of local lamb, beef or pork combined with Ayrshire ‘tatties’ or indulge your sweet tooth with ice cream, chocolate and more.

GOLF

With three Open Championship venues, five of the UK’s top 100 golf courses and golf passes, it’s easy to see why this is one of Scotland’s top regions for golf.

Choose from close to 50 golf courses in Ayrshire & Arran offering classic links and majestic inland layouts, or take a tour with a golf partner.

ISLANDS

Just a short ferry ride across the Firth of Clyde and you can explore either Arran or Cumbrae, or even both! Experience perfect island life, which is full of tasty food and drink, exciting outdoor activities and beautiful views.

From Girvan, you can take a boat trip to Ailsa Craig, where the granite on the island is mined for curling stones.

So as you can see a visit to the Ranch Holiday Park is or should be your next port of call.
