‘WAKING THE DEAD DETECTIVES’ ARREST MAN OVER MURDER OF EX-UDR SOLDIER

Suspect held at serious crime custody suite in Musgrave PSNI station over James Gibson murder

A MAN has been arrested in connection with the 1982 murder of ex-UDR soldier James Gibson in the Coalisland area of Co Tyrone.

The 54-year-old was arrested by PSNI officers from the PSNI’s Legacy Investigation Branch under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

He is currently being questioned at the serious crime custody suite in Musgrave PSNI station in Belfast.

The suspect was aged 19 at the time of the murder.

Mr Gibson was ambushed by the IRA while driving a school bus in Coalisland.

He had stopped at a crossroads when he was shot and later died in hospital.

None of the children on board the bus were injured in the gunfire.

The victim, a widower with seven children, had resigned from the UDR in 1980.

A 21-year-old bricklayer from Coalisland received a life sentence in April 1984 for Mr. Gibson’s killing.
