He was taken to hospital after he was shot and assaulted by a masked gang in North Antrim.

The victim, who is in his 30s, was shot in the back and struck about the head and body outside his house in the Bann Road area of Ballymoney.

He is in a serious but stable condition in Coleraine’s Causeway hospital, after the attack at about 8 pm last night.

The suspects are believed to have made off from the scene in a car in the direction of Bendooragh.

The police are trying to establish a motive for the attack.

Detective Inspector Bob Blemmings is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information which could assist detectives to contact them on the 101 number.

Or information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on freephone 0800 555 111.

North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey condemned the attack, saying this is not what “our community wants”.

“On a day when we were remembering brave soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom, it is sad that there are those in our community who engage in this barbaric behaviour believing it to be justified and that they are doing something for their community,” he added.

“Nothing could be further from the truth. In the cover of darkness masked men took the law into their own hands to execute their form of justice.”
