DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit have charged a man with the attempted murder of a prison officer who cheated death in a bomb attack in Belfast last week.

The 45-year-old man has also been charged with possession of explosives with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to property.

He is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates’ Court this morning for a first remand hearing.

A 39-year-old man who was also arrested in connection with the attack has been released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

Another man, a 34-year-old, who was being questioned about the bombing has been released unconditionally.

The 52-year-old officer was seriously injured when the Semtex device exploded under his as he hit a speed bump at Hillsborough Drive in east Belfast.

He has since been discharged from hospital.

A dissident republican group calling itself the ‘New IRA’ claimed responsibility for the murder bid.
