ELDERLY RESIDENTS CHEAT INJURY IN ARSON ATTACK ON FLATS

Fire crew sceneDETECTIVES have launched an arson investigation following a deliberate early morning fire in a seaside town.

A number of elderly people were among those who had to flee homes in Newcastle, Co Down.

Around 50 fire fighters from across Co Down were drafted in to to tackle the blaze at a set of eight flats at Bracken Avenue.

The fire broke out around 3.10 am this morning and police police believe it was started deliberately in an oil tank

The fire service used a high reach appliance and seven pumps to fight the flames and stop them spreading to other properties.

The Fire and Rescue Service said the quick actions of its crews and local police response teams helped save the day and prevent any casualties.
