MAN TO FACE COURT OVER PROVO BOMB ATTACK ON POLICE STATION

Omagh magistrates courtDETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit have charged a man over a Provisional IRA bomb attack on RUC station almost two decades ago.

An improvised device was thrown at the station and exploded on 26 March 18 years ago.

The man has been charged with causing an explosion.

The accused will appear at Dungannon Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

On the evening of 26 March 1997, the Provisional IRA’s East Tyrone Brigade launched the improvised grenade attack on the fortified base.

The blast sparked an immediate reaction by an undercover SAS unit.

They turned up at the scene in unmarked vehicles wearing baseball caps emblazoned with ‘ARMY’ across the front.

The SAS unit who shot and wounded alleged PIRA volunteer, Gareth Doris.

The undercover soldiers were then surrounded by a crowd of protesters who prevented them approaching Doris or leaving.

RUC officers arrived and fired plastic bullets at the crowd, allowing the special forces to leave the area.

Searches were later carried out to trace the four man IRA gang.

Two men were later arrested for questioning.
