A young couple, believed to be from Northern Ireland, have drowned in South Africa.

The 28-year-old man and 26-year-old woman were found on a beach at Plettenberg Bay on Friday.

Efforts were made to resuscitate them, but they were declared dead at the scene.

Their devastated families have been informed.

Rescue workers said sea conditions were rough at the time, with strong rip-currents in the water.

It is believed the holidaymakers had gone for a swim shortly after arriving at the popular tourist resort.

The Foreign Office in London has confirmed the deaths of two British nationals.

“We are providing assistance to both families at this extremely difficult time, and will remain in contact with local authorities,” a spokesperson added.

The identity of the couple has not yet been released.
