DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team investigating the murder of Kevin McGuigan have arrested three men.

Detective Chief Inspector John McVea said: “The men, aged 53, 44 and 41 were arrested at various locations in the greater Belfast area this morning, Tuesday, August 18.

“All three have now been taken to the Serious Crime Suite for questioning.”

McGuigan, 53, was shot by two masked gunmen as he got out of his car outside his home at Comber Court in the Short Strand area of east Belfast just before 9 pm on Wednesday 12 August.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital but died a short time later.

Last week detectives arrested two people, a man and a woman, as part of the wider investigation into the murder, both were subsequently released unconditionally.

McGuigan’s funeral is due to get underway at 12 pm at St Matthew’s Church in the Short Strand.

Police are heightened alert over possible revenge attacks on senior IRA figures in the city from associates of McGuigan.
