POLICE have closed parts of the M5 and A2 roads due to a security alert on the northern outskirts of Belfast.

The alert was sparked after a suspicious object was found in Abbeydale Close near Newtownabbey Police Station.

Army Technical Officers are currently at the scene examining the device.

The M5 is closed towards Newtownabbey from M2 to Hazelbank.

The A2 Shore Road has been closed in both directions between Hazelbank roundabout and Station Road. Diversions are in place.

The alert has caused disruption to public transport.

Translink’s Metro 2G and Ulsterbus 163 services being diverted via Station Road and Doagh Road in both directions.
