DCI John McVea appeals for information about this morning’s murder of Eamonn Magee jnr

DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team have arrested a 29 year old man in connection with the murder of a talented boxer in west Belfast this morning.

Eamonn Magee jnr was fatally wounded in the stomach and chest during the attack in the Summerhill Park area of Twinbrook.

He is the son of former world welterweight champion Eamonn Magee.

The PSNI say that just before 2.40am, police received a report that the man had been stabbed.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Police named the dead man as 22 year old Eamonn Magee from the West Belfast area.

The 29 year old man, arrested in the Dunmurry area on suspicion of murder, is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

The officer leading the MIT investigation team, Detective Chief Inspector John McVea, said: “We are currently investigating the circumstances which led to the death of such a young man as Eamonn, who is a son, a brother, a partner and a friend.

“I would therefore appeal to anyone who saw or heard any dispute in the Summerhill Park area, or who knows anything about this murder, to contact detectives at Lisburn Police Station on the non emergency number 101.

“Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
