POLICE have arrested a woman following a report of a hate crime on a bus in north Belfast.

A woman allegedly assaulted a number of people on a bus travelling into the city on the Antrim Road after initially verbally abusing an elderly Polish couple shortly before noon on Tuesday.

Police also received a report that the bus driver was assaulted.

A 57-year-old woman is being questioned about disorderly behaviour, assault on police and three common assaults.

Sinn Féin councillor Mary Ellen Campbell, said she was was struck during the incident.

“There were other people on the bus – it was mainly elderly people – and some of them were quite visibly upset, some of them were actually crying,” she said.

“I think everybody was quite embarrassed that this happened on a bus in Belfast to these people who were obviously just visiting.

“The two Polish people, they looked very, very shocked that this had occurred.”
