DUP MLA William Humphrey MLA has warmly welcomed the start of building work this month to extend Springfield Primary School.

The extension will add a seventh classroom for the growing school, along with a new Principal’s office, staff room and a servery for school dinners.

School Principal Kathryn Haugh said that the extension was essential to provide for the increasing enrolment at the school.

“This extension will provide a purpose-built seventh classroom, for which we have had to use the school library in recent years,” she said.

“The Board of Governors, the parents, the staff and the children are all delighted to see the extension work underway. This will add to the quality of the education experience at Springfield.”

North Belfast DUP MLA William Humphrey said: “This is a very welcome investment which consolidates the position of the school.

“I wish to pay tribute to Mrs Haugh and all associated with Springfield Primary for increasing their enrolment over recent years, rising to 180 pupils this September.

“This reflects the general increase in pupil numbers across the Greater Shankill area in recent years.

“Clearly Springfield is regarded as a popular and supportive local school. This extension will remove some of the playground and parking space on an already tight site.

“Along with party colleagues I am raising this issue with other statutory agencies to press for additional adjacent land to be made available for this growing school.”
