FORMER SDLP leader Margaret Ritchie has called for public backing for a VAT reduction boost jobs and tourism.

VAT is currently charged on goods at the rate of 20p in the pound.

The South Down MP said: “There is growing financial evidence base which shows that a reduction of VAT on tourism products increases jobs and investment.

“Just look at the South of Ireland where VAT on tourist products and venues has been laced at 9 per cent.

“Campaigning must continue with the Chancellor and Treasury to reduce VAT on tourist products in Northern Ireland which is at 20 per cent.

“I would urge people write to the Chancellor of Exchequer, George Osborne, in the Treasury in London to support the case for a reduction in VAT on tourist products.”
