MAN ARRESTED OVER NORTH BELFAST CARJACKING

Police scene armed copDETECTIVES are questioning a 33 year old man over a car hijacking bid.

He was arrested for other related offences following an incident in the Glenbank Drive area of North Belfast on Thursday.

 Police say that at around 4.30pm, officers received a report that a man had approached a woman as she was getting into her car and dragged her to the ground.

The suspect took keys from the woman and an attempt made to start the car.

Have-a-go passersby came to the woman’s aid and detained the suspect until the arrival of police.

The woman was treated for cuts and bruising following the incident and the man remains in custody helping police with their enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Ken Leckey said: “I would like to thank the members of the public involved in apprehending this individual for their quick thinking and brave response to a serious incident.

“I would also ask anyone who witnessed this incident but has yet to speak to police to contact detectives in CID at Tennent Street on 101.”
