MAN HUNTED OVER ATTEMPTED HIJACKINGS IN SOUTH BELFAST

PSNIDETECTIVES in South Belfast are investigating a number of attempted hijacking incidents this week.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Reid explains; “The first incident reported to police occurred in Cromac Street at around 5pm on Wednesday when a man attempted to open the driver’s door of a car in which a woman was sitting.

“The doors were locked however, and the man made off towards Central Train Station.

“Two further incidents were reported in the Stewart Street area a short time later.

“In one of these incidents a woman was again targeted as she sat in her car. A male tried to open the doors of her parked car but made off when he could not gain access due to the doors being locked.

“The next report involved a man attempting to snatch car keys from a woman in Stewart Street as she walked towards her car. The woman resisted and the man made off.

“In Russell Street at around 6.30pm, a man attempted to drag a woman driver from her car but failed to so and made off from the area.

“We believe the same man was involved in each of these incidents and was described as being in his late teens, around 5’9” tall, of slim build and was wearing a grey coloured hooded top.

“I am appealing to anyone who witnessed any of these incidents or who has any information which may be of assistance to our investigation to contact CID in Musgrave on 101. Information can also be given anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“Motorists are also being encouraged to consider car security at all times and follow the steps outlined below.

Keep your doors locked.
Keep your windows up at all times.
Keep all valuables out of sight.
Park in well lit, busy areas or car parks.
When approaching your parked vehicle, be alert.
Avoid listening to MP3 players as you approach the car – it distracts you from potential threats.

Never leave your keys in the ignition or the engine running in an unattended vehicle and always lock your car.

“Report anything suspicious to the police immediately.”
