NORTH Belfast DUP MLA William Humphrey has called for people to be considerate of others if using fireworks over the coming weeks.

Mr Humphrey said: “I have been contacted by a number of constituents over recent weeks, particularly elderly constituents, concerned about the inappropriate use of fireworks.

“When these are used inappropriately, particularly in built up areas, it can be very frightening for people and indeed can be dangerous. It can also be very distressing for pets.

“There is always a concentration in the use of fireworks at this time of year in the run up to Hallowe’en. I understand that many people wish to enjoy fireworks and I am not against that when used appropriately, but let’s use them responsibly and be considerate of others.

“People should remember that ‘bangers’ have been illegal in Northern Ireland for several years, due to the danger posed when these are thrown.

“There are also legal restrictions on the sale, storage and use of fireworks, with details available on the NI Direct website.”
