POLICE and the Fire and Rescue Service are trying to establish what sparked gorse fires yesterday in Co Down.

More than 30 firefighters have been called to deal with large gorse fires in the seaside town of Newcastle.

The Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the fires at Tullybrannigan Road around 3 pm.

Eight fire appliances were sent to the area and the fires were quickly brought under control.
