Police probe arson attack on St Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newtownabbey

DETECTIVES are investigating an overnight arson attack on a Catholic church.

The attack on St Mary’s Star of the Sea in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, is being treated as a sectarian hate crime.

The damage was discovered shortly before 1.30 am on Sunday morning at the church on the Shore Road in Newtownabbey.

It is believed flammable liquid was used in the attack, which caused scorch damage to the front door of the church.

A police spokesman said they were treating the incident as a hate crime and detectives at Newtownabbey CID appealed for anyone with information to contact them on the non-emergency 101 number.

The church has been targeted a number of times previously.

A petrol bomb and paint were thrown at the church.

A man in his 50s was later arrested for questioning about the attack and a number of other incidents at the church.
