POLICE have welcomed the peaceful outcome of tonight’s Tour of the North Parade.

Tensions had been high after republicans used social media sites to urge supporters to come out in force to back the Carrick Hill residents.

Commending the work carried out on all sides to ensure the parade passed off without any major incident, A District Commander Chief Superintendent Nigel Grimshaw said, “Police put a significant operation in place tonight and I am pleased with how the parade has passed.

“I am encouraged by the dignified and responsible way both those involved in the parade and associated protests behaved and appreciate the efforts of all those involved in ensuring this was the case.

“As we move forward I would encourage everyone to work together to ensure that the remainder of the summer is peaceful and that local communities are not disrupted with the violence witnessed in recent years.”
