Police have now re-opened the Whitehouse Road after reports of suspicious activity

ALL roads have now been re-opened following a day-long policing operation into suspicious activity.

Police re-opened the main Derry to Buncrana road earlier this afternoon after it was closed during morning rush hour.

The main thoroughfare had been closed from Skeoge Road and Templemore Sports Complex as police carried out a search operation.

Minor roads in the area – including Whitehouse Road, Cosquinn Road and Groarty Road – which had remained closed during extensive searches have also been re-opened after nothing suspicious was found.

A PSNI spokesperson said police were conducting the search of the area following a report of suspicious activity.

Army bomb disposal experts attended the scene.

Last week police warned members of the public in the Whitehouse Road area to be vigilant and to report any suspicious objects to police.

At the time, a police spokesperson revealed a thorough search had carried out following information that suggested there may be something suspicious in the area.

The spokesperson said officers went door to door talking to local residents and while nothing was found police asked should someone come across a suspicious object they do not touch it and contact police immediately.
