A TURKISH national has been remanded in custody on Monday charged with raping a teenage girl in Belfast at the weekend.

Firat Akay faced Belfast Magistrates’ Court accused of the alleged attack in the Antrim Road area of north Belfast early on Saturday morning.

The 28-year-old, with an address at Sealands Parade, Belfast, faced charges.

He was accused of rape, sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault.

He replied “Yes I do” when asked if he understood the charges.

A detective constable from the PSNI’s Rape Crime Unit said she could connect him to the charges.

Akay was remanded in custody to appear again by video link later this week.

He is then expected to apply for bail before a district judge.
