FIRE crews are at the scene of a major fire in Derry tonight.

The blaze has broke out at the former St Peter’s High School in the Creggan Estate.

It is understood the blaze begun an hour ago with hundreds of bystanders gathering to watch the fire.

The school closed its gates for the last time at the end or last year.

It is not known at this stage as to what caused the fire.

There are no reports of any injuries at this stage.

An eyewitness told Belfast Daily: “There are flames flying out of the school. It is huge. Nobody knows how it started.

“You cannot tell how many fire engines are here as the gates are open and the tenders are right in at the back. However, there are hundreds of people here.”
