Fire crews tackled a blaze at former Northgate pub in Carrickfergus

AN investigation is under way after a former bar was destroyed in a fire.

A number of homes were evacuated as the fire service dealt with the blaze the one-time Northgate pub in North Street, Carrickfergus, Co Antrim.

The Fire and Rescue Service said said crews managed to stop the fire spreading to an adjoining shopping centre.

“The initial efforts were to prevent the fire spreading into the De Courcy centre and the crews worked very hard to achieve that,” said Assistant Group Commander David Heyburn.

“There has been practically no damage at all to the De Courcy centre and that’s a great success.”

Fire investigators are now trying to establish how the fire started.
