AN ELDERLY man was among two people arrested for working illegally at a takeaway in west Belfast.

A 25-year-old Indian man and a 73-year-old Pakistani man were detained after immigration enforcement officers visited Ali’s Kebab House on Kingsway on Thursday.

The business was served with a penalty notice for employing the illegal workers.

As a result, the employers will have to provide evidence that they carried out correct pre-employment checks on the workers to avoid fines of up to £10,000 per employee.

The two foreign nationals are currently being detained at Home Office custody suite in Larne House while steps are taken to remove them to their home countries.

Mike Golden of the UK Border Agency, said: “Foreign nationals who are in this country illegally should be in no doubt that they will be caught, arrested and removed from the UK.

“We are determined to crack down on immigration offenders and anyone found living or working here illegally is liable to be detained and removed.”
