RESIDENTS have returned to their homes after they were evacuated in south Belfast over a security alert following the discovery of a suspect object.

Police were alerted to the scene at Iverna Close in the Sandy Row area of the city on Saturday morning.

Army technical officers attended the scene to examine the object. The area was later cleared by the ATO.

The Sandy Row Community Centre was made available to evacuated residents.

The alert comes just hours before thousands of fans descend on south Belfast for the Irish Cup final between Cliftonville and Glentoran.

Police are expected to have a highly visible presence around the Windsor Park ground.

It follows messages posted on social media sites of possible protests following the IFA’s decision not to play the national anthem before the start of the game.

A DUP delegation met with the IFA earlier this week about the decision.
