Police charge man over 1977 murder bid on prison officer in north Belfast

A MAN has been charged with the attempted murder of a prison officer in north Belfast more than 35 years ago.

The attack happened on the Oldpark Road on June 28, 1977.

The 64-year-old suspect is also charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life on the same date.

He is due to appear in court at Belfast Magistrates Court on Saturday.

The file was reopened by the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch following fresh information on the case.
