THE PSNI say a security alert in Newtownabbey, County Antrim on Tuesday night has now ended.

Army technical officers have declared the device as an “elaborate hoax”.

A police spokesman said the PSNI had received a report that a device had been left in the Shore Road area of Whiteabbey.

Officers searched for the device and as a result the Shore Road had been closed between Hazelbank and the Doagh Road.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area and take an alternative route.

The area has now been declared safe and roads in the area have now re-opened.
