CSI officers comb the murder scene in Ballymena

DETECTIVES have arrested the son of a man stabbed to death in Ballymena on Monday night.

The murder victim has been named as 64-year-old John Lamont who had recently retired.

His 26-year-old son Greg Lamont was arrested and is in custody on Tuesday evening being questioned about the murder.

His 59-year-old mother was taken to Antrim Area Hospital suffering from stab wounds following the incident at a semi-detached house in the Carnvale area off the Carniny Road on Monday night.

Her condition is described as critical.

Greg Lamont is behind held by detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team (MIT) on suspicion of murdering his father and attempting to murder his mother at the family home they have lived in for over 20 years.

He can be held for up to 24 hours before detectives have to decide whether to charge or release him, or apply to a court for a further detention in custody to assist their investigations.
