PSNI charge man over pensioner assault and robbery

A MAN is to face a court in the morning on a string of offences linked to a robbery and attack on a pensioner at the weekend.

The 70-year-old was attacked by a man who entered his house on Abetta Parade shortly before 10:20 GMT on Sunday.

The intruder ransacked the house and took the pensioner’s car keys, stealing his car – a silver Mitsubishi Carisma.

Local politicians earlier condemned the attack, branding it as “disgusting”.

A 37-year-old man has been charged with burglary, false imprisonment, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He is also accused of taking a vehicle without lawful authority.

The man has also been charged with a number of offences over an earlier domestic incident at a house in the Greenville Road area of east Belfast.

He is charged with two counts of false imprisonment, two counts of theft, one of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.

The suspect has also been charged with possession of a blade in public and possession of class A drug.

The 37-year-old is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates in the morning.

Police investigating the Abetta Parade attack are keen to speak to a taxi driver, who dropped off a fare in Union Street in Belfast city centre at around 2.30pm on Sunday.

The taxi driver was travelling in a blue Ford Mondeo with a taxi sign on the roof.

The pensioner’s car has still not been found.
