POLICE WARNING: THIEVES USING MAGNETS TO STEAL CAR KEYS

Police warn the public of fresh spate of burglaries along the Lisburn Road in south Belfast

Police warn the public that thieves are using magnets attached to fishing rods or poles to steal car keys from hallways

POLICE are warning the public not to leave keys in their hallways after receiving a number of queries.

It follows a number of posts that have been seen on Facebook regarding criminals using magnets to steal keys.

A spokesperson said: “This is not something that we have come across in recent times.

“However, criminals have been known in the past to use magnets attached to coat hangers, fishing rod or purpose built tools placed through a letter box in an attempt to retrieve your keys.!

“Our advice would be not to keep keys in doors/windows and to keep keys out of view in a hard to reach place.

“Keys can be kept somewhere where you know where they are so in the case of an emergency they can be easily obtained.

“There are a number of devices available that can be used to lock your letterbox after the postman has been which would not allow criminals the opportunity to fish for your keys.

“Flaplock (a secured by design accredited product) is one such device but there are other products available.

“If you have any concerns please contact your local station on telephone number 101.”
