POLICE say the security alert on the Whitewell Road area of Newtownabbey has now ended.

ATO examined a suspicious object discovered in the area and, following a controlled explosion, have confirmed it to be a hoax.

All roads in the area have now reopened to traffic and evacuated residents allowed to returned to their homes.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed any unusual activity in the area overnight or anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact officers in Tennent Street on 101 quoting reference 268 24/07/18.

Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.
