Ryan James Fairlamb, 21, did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.
The soldier with the 2nd Battlion The Rifles, currently stationed at Ballykinlar army base in Co Down, is further charged with attempted rape and two counts of common assault.
Detectives from the PSNI’s Rape Crime Unit arrested Fairlamb after it was reported the victim was raped at Custom House Square in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He was brought from the cells at Musgrave Street PSNI station to face District Judge Fiona Bagnall at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
As is normal procedure the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
The Rifles are due to leave Ballykinlar this month and move to Thiepval Barracks in Lisburn, Co Antrim.
