MURDER PROBE LAUNCHED OVER BABY’S DEATH IN EAST BELFAST

PSNIDETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team have launched a murder inquiry over a child’s death.

The PSNI announced this evening that officers investigating an incident in the Connsbrook Avenue area of east Belfast last month in which a baby was critically injured have started a murder investigation following the death of the infant.

A woman was arrested at the time and was detained under the Mental Health Act.

Police inquiries are continuing.

Last month, the mother was held on suspicion of attempted murder for allegedly trying to smother her baby.

The infant was later taken in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria’s Childrens Hospital following the incident in east Belfast, on Friday, March 7.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team later arrested the woman.

She was taken into custody at Musgrave Street PSNI station where she was quizzed about the incident.

The woman was later released for medical treatment under the Mental Health Act.
