A MOTHER has been held on suspicion of attempted murder for allegedly trying to smother her baby.

The infant is now in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria’s Childrens Hospital following the incident in east Belfast on Friday afternoon.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team later arrested the woman.

She is currently in custody at Musgrave Street PSNI station being quizzed about the incident.

Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) spent Friday afternoon examining the family home at Connsbrook Avenue just off the Newtownards Road.
