POLICE and the bomb squad are at the scene of a security alert in south Belfast on Friday night.

A number of houses have been evacuated in Welsh Street in the Markets district close to Belfast city centre.

Army technical officers are examining a suspicious object.

It is understood around 50 people have been forced to leave their homes.

The scene is not far from where a mob of up to 50 people tried to burn a man out of his home last Saturday night in Eliza Street Close.

Riot squad cops were called around 10.30 pm to protect the home after the mob marched on the house after it was organised on Facebook.

The pensioner was at home at the time and police were forced to draw batons to stop the crowd attacking the property.
