Man granted High Court bail over threatening to bite policeman’s nose off

A man re-arrested weeks after a drunken hospital incident allegedly threatened to bite a policeman’s nose off, the High Court has heard.

Louis Maguire lunged at the officer and insulted him, prosecutors claimed.

The 25-year-old, with a hostel address on Belfast’s University Street, faces charges of disorderly behaviour and two separate counts of assault on police.

He was released on bail but warned he must seek immediate medical help for alcohol addiction.

Maguire was first arrested following an incident at the Royal Victoria Hospital on 1 June.

Police intervened as he struggled and swore at staff trying to escort him from the Accident and Emergency Department, the court heard on Friday.

As officers tried to decide what to do with him he attempted to head-butt one of them, according to the prosecution.

Although eventually released, Maguire was detained again when police were called to disturbances during a barbeque at his sister’s home last Sunday.

Fiona O’Kane, prosecuting, said he had been drinking vodka at the time.”Whilst en route back to custody he said ‘I will bite your nose off,'” she told the court.

“He lunged at a police officer putting him in fear that he was going to strike him.”

Defence counsel John O’Connor stressed that Maguire is not accused of making any physical contact.

He described his client’s alcohol problems as being “a disease”.

Bail was granted after Maguire pledged to contact his GP within seven days to arrange a referral to community addiction services.

Confirming his intention to review his compliance in September, Mr Justice Horner told him: “I’m now giving you a chance to break the hold alcohol has on you.

“If it turns out you are not prepared to take that chance bail will be revoked.”
