POLICE are advising motorists throughout Northern Ireland to exercise extreme caution when driving this afternoon and evening due to heavy rain.
A spokesman said: “Our advice to drives is reduce your speed, keep a safe distance and allow extra braking time and use headlights.”
A number of roads are now closed across the province as torrential rains sweeps in.
Roads currently closed include:
Armagh:
A51 Armagh Road, Tandragee closed at junction with Cooley Hill Road
Lurgan/Lisburn:
Cockhill Road, Lisburn.
Feney Road, Moira.
Clarehill Road, Moira.
Blaris Road, Lisburn.
Bridge Road, Lurgan.
B2 Lurgan Rd, Dromore closed due to subsidence
Newry:
Ballyholland Road, Newry.
North-west:
A5 Victoria Rd, Magheramason (Strabane-Derry Road)
Co Tyrone:
Drumlester Road, Sixmilecross.
Some roads and streets in Belfast are also start fill with water as the rain showers intensify.
And blocked storm drains filled with leaves are bubbling over onto footpaths.
