Car and home of John Howcroft’s partner attacked in north Belfast

A RIVAL UDA faction is being blamed for an arson attack on a car belonging to the partner of former UFF prisoner John Howcroft.

Police say that the car was in the driveway of a house at Alliance Road in north Belfast when it was attacked around 3.15 am this morning.

John Howcroft, who is a leading member of the Ulster Political Research Group, the political wing of the UDA, was at home at the time when a rival UDA faction carried out the attack.

The front door of the house was also damaged in the fire.

Fire crews were called to the scene to put out the blaze before it spread.

Police believe the door of the house caught fire because of flames coming from the car.

No one was injured.

Mr Howcroft is a close friend of north Belfast UDA brigadier John Bunting.

Last week, a member of the rival UDA faction attacked Bunting’s car by throwing a pipe bomb at it while parked in Duncairn Gardens.

The device failed to explode and a 27-year-old local man was arrested and questioned before being released.

Tensions have been high between the two groups for months now.

In one incident Bunting was assaulted in the Tigers Bay area and his mobile phone was stolen.

Local politicians have called for an end to the internal UDA feud before someone is seriously injured.
