The man was driving along Derry’s Racecourse Road in the vicinity of the border shortly after 10.30 pm when he noticed two men at the side of the road.

One of the men appeared to be ill and the man stopped to offer assistance.

When he got out of the vehicle one of the males pushed him to the ground and both then drove off in his silver coloured Mitsubishi pick-up which was found abandoned a short time later in Bloomfield Park in the Galliagh area.

One of the males is described as being in his late 20s, approximately 5’10” tall, of medium build, with short black hair.

He was wearing dark hooded sweat-top, dark jacket with a high collar and jeans. The second male is described as being aged in his early 20’s, approximately 5’8″ tall, of thin build, with short brown hair.

He was wearing jeans and a dark sweat-top.

A PSNI spokesperson asked anyone with any information about the incident to contact CID in Strand Road Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.

Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
