DETECTIVES are examining a firearm recovered during house searches in east Belfast.

During the security operation, police called in Army technical officers to examine the weapon which was found in an empty house in Bloomfield Drive on Thursday morning.

A number of streets in the area were closed during the operation.

The searches, say police, were part of an ongoing operation in organised crime in east Belfast.

The firearm has been removed for ballistic and forensic testing. The security cordon has now been lifted and roads reopened.
