Police uncover a quantity of ammunition during searches in Forkhill, south Armagh

POLICE have recovered a quantity of ammunition following a security alert in south Armagh.

It is understood the PSNI was acting on information received that the ammo had been left in the Forkhill area.

As a result, police warned the public to stay out of the area of Captains Road, New Road and the Newry Road while the scene was examined by Army technical officers.

They have now been reopened.

However, police are advising that the Carrickasticken Road remains closed at the junction with the Newry Road.

Two weeks ago police uncovered a deadly Russian-made mortar launcher left by dissident republicans who planned to shot down a PSNI helicopter in the Cullyhanna area.
