MAN REMANDED IN CUSTODY ON IRA AND GUN CHARGES

Daniel McClean remanded in custody on IRA and firearm offences

A 52-year-old man has faced a Belfast court charged with IRA terrorism offences.

Daniel McClean of Lagmore Gardens, Dunmurry, was accused of being a member of the Irish Republican Army.

He was also charged with collecting information likely to be of use to terrorists and possession of a firearm and imitation firearm.

The charges arose from an intelligence-led anti-terrorist police operation on the Stewartstown Road in west Belfast on Thursday.

He was detained during a stop and search operation carried out by a local district policing team at the request of the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation (TIU).

It is understood that following an arrest, premises were searched in the Lagmore area and a suspected firearm and documentation were seized.

The accused spoke only to confirm his identity.

A PSNI detective told the court she believed she could connect the defendant with charges.

He was remanded in custody to Maghaberry prison.
