UPDATED NEWS: SECURITY ALERT ENDS AS POLICE SAY OBJECT ‘NON-VIABLE’

A security alert in the Botanic area of Belfast has ended.

The alert followed the report of a suspicious object in the Cromwell Road area around 12:45 pm today.

A number of roads that were closed in and around the Cromwell Road area have since re-opened and residents evacuated from properties have been allowed to return.

The suspect device was examined and declared non-viable.

Inspector David White said: “We appreciate the disruption caused as a result of our security operation this afternoon.

“I want to thank the public for their patience and co-operation while we worked to make the scene safe. Keeping people is our priority and we will not take any chances.

“I would appeal to anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact us on the non emergency number 101, quoting reference number CCS 473 07/03/19.”

Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.
