JOHN FINUCANE SECOND FAVOURITE AS BOOKIES BACK DODDS TO RETAIN SEAT

John Finucane and party president Gerry Adams out on the hustings in north Belfast at the weekend

IT looks ‘Deputy Dodds’ will hold onto his north Belfast seat in this week’s General election.

The outgoing DUP MP Nigel Dodds is odds on favourite with Paddy Power to returned to Westminster to represent the constituency of Belfast North again.

The bookmakers have the DUP deputy leader at 1/3 while solicitor John Finucane is quoted at 2/1.

Sinn Fein has brought in its big guns into the north Belfast constituency to try and wrestled the seat from Mr Dodds.

Sinn Fein’s leader in the north Michelle O’Neill, party president Gerry Adams and his deputy Mary Lou McDonald have been among the big hitters who have been out on the hustings in north Belfast to try and get Mr Finucane elected.

But Mr Dodds, whose elderly mother is unwell at the moment, topped the poll in 2015 with a commanding lead of lead of almost 6,000 votes over Sinn Fein’s Gerry Kelly.

Sinn Fein is hoping that John Finucane, the son of murdered solicitor Pat Finucane, will be a popular choice for the north Belfast nationalist/republican voter and help him first past the post.

But it appears the books don’t see him turning around Mr Dodds’s huge lead and believe the Belfast solicitor will come in on the rails in second place.

Sinn Fein brings out the big hitters in Paul Maskey, Gerry Kelly, Alex Maskey and Cara Ni Chuilin to help get John Finucane elected in north Belfast
