UDA murder victim Colin Horner shot dead in Bangor on Sunday as he was getting into his car

DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team have made a second arrest over the murder of Colin Horner at the weekend.

A 47-year-old man was detained in Newtownards onWednesday under section 41 of the Terrorism Act as part of the murder probe.

He was taken to the serious crime custody suite at Musgrave PSNI station for questioning.

A 26-year-old man remains in custody being quizzed about the brutal killing.

He was arrested on Tuesday evening in Newtowards.

MIT detectives say they are still keen to trace the movements of a car used in the UDA murder on Sunday.

The 35-year-old victim had fled to Bangor from Carrickfergus over a bitter feud within the South East Antrim (SEA) UDA.

He was getting into his Nissan car with his three-year-old son at the Sainsbury’s car park in Bangor’s Balloo Link when a man approached and shot him three times.

Det Supt Richard Campbell described the murder as both “callous” and “reckless” after one bullet struck another car.

The PSNI believe the gunman made his escape, with at least one other accomplice in a red Ford Mondeo registration GKZ 7996.

But this was a false plate, police say.

The Mondeo was parked across from Sainsbury’s car park and had a missing rear driver’s side hub cap.

It is thought to have driven off in the direction of Six Road Ends before it was found burnt out on Kerrs Road between Newtownards and Bangor.

Mr Campbell said the vehicle may have been following Mr Horner in the run up to the shooting.

“There was the gunman and at least one other associate.

“So they must have had another vehicle on the Kerrs Road to take them away, so someone must have saw them, or them burning the car,” the officer continued.

“There were a number of people we are yet to speak to and urge them to come forward and speak to police in Bangor.

“I am conscious this happened in a busy car park on a Sunday afternoon and there may be people with footage on mobile phones and I would urge those people to come forward.”

The detective also encouraged anyone with dashboard camera footage that was in the area at the time to contact police as it may hold vital clues in the pursuit of the gunman.”
