Royal Marine commando Ciaran Maxwell arrested in dissident terror probe

THE PSNI are searching an area in Larne in connection with Northern Ireland-related terrorism investigation.

Boiler suite police officers are carrying out the search along the Inver Road area.

Last week, Larne-born Royal Marine commando Ciaran Maxwell was arrested in Somerset under the Terrorism Act as part of a UK-wide probe into dissident republican terrorist activity.

The arrest was directly linked to the discovery of two arms dumps at Carnfunnock Country Park and Capanagh Forest in Larne in March and May this year.

These finds were thought to be linked to dissident republican paramilitaries.

Following the arrest of the 30-year-old, police launched searches in at the Old Glenarm Road in Larne and also in Devon, England.

The 30-year-old marine is still being questioned at Paddington Green top security police station in London.

Detectives from Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command have until 12.20 pm tomorrow, Wednesday, August 31, to either charge or release Maxwell.
