DETECTIVES have issued an image of loyalist crime boss John ‘Bonzer’ Boreland which was probably the last picture of him seen alive.

It was taken a short time before he was blasted to death on Sunday, August 7 with a sawn off shotgun.

The picture was captured on CCTV in a bar on the Oldpark Road and was seized by police as part of the investigation.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team are keen to speak to anyone who saw Mr Boreland between the time he left the bar and when he was shot outside his flat in Sunningdale Gardens.

Anyone with information should contact detectives at Musgrave Police Station on 101.

Detectives believe the murder was carried out as a result of a internal UDA feud.

A partially burned out Renault Megane car was seized last week by police in Lisburn, Co Down.

Police believe it was in Sunningdale Gardens on the night of Boreland’s murder and was the getaway vehicle for the hit-man.

It now points up the questions: did UDA south Belfast brigadier Jackie McDonald sanction the murder on his one-time Inner Council rival or was it carried out without his knowledge?
